How Henry Sy Started

Henry Sy's Story

Henry Sy was born poor in a small village in Southern China. He followed his father to the Philippines with the hopes of starting a business in the foreign country.

Soon enough they started a small store filled with different kinds of goods. And when things were about to go well world war 2 happened. The economy went down and their small store was burned which forced his father to go back to China.

Henry Sy decided to stay and started a shoe business in Marikina City.

Banks gave him loans to rebuild his business. He also used the money to study in FEU to study Commerical Studies.

When the economy started to get better he decided to put up his first shoemart store in Manila.

It gained popularity which allowed him to put up two more stores until shoemart became what we currently know today as "SM Supermalls".
